I have a very hard time getting a shot I like. Partly it's the contrast between the dark leaves and background vs the very delicate, white/pink flowers. Partly it's all the rain and dew that makes it hard to get a nice crisp photo. Partly it's me just being particular. Anyway, here is the first try for 2011. And yes, it has already been pointed out that I should go back and try another shot when that centre flower opens.

Back Again

What can I say; I have trouble sticking to a project ...

Blue Light

Here's a contrast to the image in my last post. It's a view of much the same area of the same lake, although taken from much further away. The biggest difference is of course the colour. This one was shot about a 15min after the sun set, when the surface of the lake was in deep blue shadow.

This was also taken standing in my living room with the patio door thrown open to make the shot. The house is about a foot higher than the back deck, so the best angle for this kind of shot of the lake is actually from inside. Oh, and I was also trying to make supper, get two little boys ready for bath and bed at the same time. So actually going outside to shoot was not an option!

My Online (Photographic) Life

It has again been quite awhile since I have posted anything of interest here. Well, one could argue that very little of what I post here will be of interest to anyone but me. But anyway … Looking back over pervious years, I always have a slow period over the fall/winter when it comes to postings and photography in general. The winter blues and all. It’s also been a busy year with the addition of another little one to the family, so I do have a good excuse again this time.

In particular, I haven’t been posting many images at all to the blog. This is largely due changes in my ‘online workflow’. I wrote during the summer about my experiment with an online portfolio on Zenfolio. That’s still there, but I have also started using Flickr as well. So I’ve now got two other places I’m posting photos on the ‘net, and this blog has fallen by the wayside.

I’ve worked out a method to this online madness to help me again get a handle on my photography as I mentioned in my earlier post. These days I’m dealing with my images this way:

1) Shoot, download, sort, edit, etc, the computer. After going through all this I’ll usually end up with 3-4 images from a particular shoot or timeframe that I think might be ‘keepers’.

2) These keepers get posted to Flickr to share and maybe get some feedback, and to again give me a chance to live with them a little.

3) Eventually, I find that of those 3-4, there may be one that will stand out. This one then goes to Zenfolio, which I’m essentially using as a ‘best of’ portfolio.

And of course, I’m still printing some prints, sticking them on my board, and so on.

You’ll notice the blog is missing from this process. I started to blog largely as a way to share some photos, but it’s really become a sounding board for organizing my thoughts on photography. Particularly where my photography is going, what I’m up to photographically, and just occasional random nonsense (like the post just prior to this one). It’s working well for me this way, so I will continue for the foreseeable future. And I will continue to post my images here as well, whenever there is something to say about them.

So, here are a few words about the image at the top of the post. This is one of those serendipitous moments. I shot this off the cuff while out photographing in the backyard. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but after going through the 40-50 images from that short session in the snow, this is the one that stood out. It had been a very cold, windy day, and the lake ending up freezing like this. It makes me think of an Apollo mission, as the spacecraft passes over the surface of the moon, just as they pass from the dark to the sunlight side of the Moon. I’m still ‘living’ with this one, but I think it might be the one to save from that set.

Take This Camera ... I had been playing around with my Pentax ME Super and was reminded of how much fun it was to shoot with. So for old time sake, I loaded a roll of film in the camera and carried it around with me as I walked back and forth to work for a few days.

Well, I'm not sure if this is a sign or not, but my first roll of film in 2 years decided to be contrary. About halfway through the roll, the film slipped off the winder, so the last dozen or so pictures were all shot on one frame. Maybe it was trying to tell me to stick to the new technology :)

Anyway, here is that last frame. Not bad all things considered.

Now Showing at Zenfolio ...

Although I have been writing this photography blog off and on since 2007, and have been shooting digital more or less exclusively since about the same time, I've never had a website or online gallery of my images. I did post photos and participate at PhotoSIG at one time, but drifted away there and withdrew all my photos several years ago.

I recently started thinking about setting up a web page or online portfolio of my work. Not because I see a pressing demand from the world to see my photos. Much like this blog, it's more a way to organize my thoughts and think about my photography, and ultimately to grow as a photographer. Mainly, it is a chance for me to see my own photos in an organized fashion on a regular basis. I've got thousands of digital images sitting on back-up drives, but rarely look at them. The pictures of family, vacations, etc get printed as 4x6 snapshots and added to our photo album collection. I also do some larger prints of my other images, but with the exception of a few hanging on the wall, these too eventually get stuffed in a box or portfolio in the closet and rarely see the light of day.

What I have been doing with those larger prints for the last year or so is posting them to a viewing board (this isn't an original idea; I think I first read it over at TOP). My board is a large magnetic white board in the den where I stick up recent prints for evaluation. Every time I sit down at the desk I can glance up and look at the images that are there. 'Living' with prints this way helps bring out which I like and which I don't, understand what works or what doesn't in a particular image, and so on. It gives me chance to see where I'm going photographically, am I improving, am I working in a new direction, etc. Images stay there for a few days, weeks or months depending on how much I'm printing and if I'm still trying to figure out a particular image.

The problem is that the wall is only so big, and I can only post a few images at a time. And printing can get to be pricey given what Epson charges for their ink these days. So I thought an online portfolio would be a good way to 'tack up' a larger number of images to look at on a regular basis, evaluate, etc. It would also be an exercise in organizing and arranging my photos along themes, projects, and so on. It could be used much like the viewing board. I'll post new, promising images on a regular basis and live with them there for a while. If they stand up to the test of time, they'll stay. Otherwise, I'll delete them. I don't plan on turning this into a portfolio of thousands of images, and expect to ever have more than a few hundred at any given time. And if it gives me a way to get more people look at my work and maybe offer feedback, then all the better.

Anyway, after that long winded introduction, the site is here. I've 'seeded' it with some older favorite images and a selection of newer work as well. I have learned a few things already from this exercise:

1) For someone who, when asked what kind of photography I do, long replied 'landscape and nature', I don't have many landscape images I think are worthwhile. I have problems composing a good image that stretches from the foreground to the background. Which can be seen in the selections I made, as they tend to be water reflections or panoramic crops. No foreground to worry about.

2) Figuring out how to organize the images was rough. Just when you think you've got it licked, up pops the exception to the classification scheme. Hence the 'Odds and Sods' cop out. And where does sand belong? 'Stream, Sand, Surf'? 'Abstract & Patterns'? Somewhere else?

Lets just say that the organization will likely change along with the images as time goes on.

3) My subject matter has tended towards the abstract and detail over the last year, as opposed to straightforward documentary and scenic photography. I kind of knew that, but how much so didn't hit me until I starting putting together some of my newer images.

See, worth the effort already.

Another Abstract

Nothing special today. We made the trip, but didn’t shoot a lot as it was raining most of the time (and my rain coat was in the trunk of my car back in Halifax.). Didn’t get up to the lighthouse either, which is just as well since it was in desperate need of a paint job. But follow along and you’ll see the connection. We did a lot of shooting impressionistic images by multiple exposures & camera movement, as well as abstract images in the workshop I attended recently. For example, the two images shown here. The first is from a wonderfully over mature and overgrown apple orchard. It was made by setting the camera to a small aperture/long shutter speed, and turning the camera. A fairly hit or miss proposition (I killed a lot of pixels to get this one) but can be quite impressive when it comes out right. The second was taken on the waterfront, and is of reflections in the gently moving water.

For a long time, I was a fairly straightforward nature and snapshot photographer. Nothing fancy, nothing the uninitiated couldn’t recognize. But I found it very hard to get a unique image. We all know what, for example, a mountain looks like. And have a good idea of what a ‘good’ photograph of a mountain should look like. And when photographing mountains, the tendency is to try to make the mountain look like it ‘should’. Which makes it hard to get an image that gives the impression of how ‘you’ see the mountain. To paraphrase a piece I once read, all pictures of Yosemite looks like those of Ansell Adams, because Ansell taught us how Yosemite looks like in photographs. Kind of circular reasoning, but illustrates the point.

So what’s the connection? With abstracts and impressions, it’s much easier to let oneself go photographically. There is less of a ‘template’ to follow, so I find it easier to relax and see whatever jumps out and grabs me. Which makes many of these images imminently satisfying to the photographic soul.

Yet Another Junkyard

Really, after years of photographing and never setting foot in a junkyard, what are the odds that I would spend two weekends in a row prowling around car wrecks with a camera. But that is what happened. I signed up for a photography workshop with Stephen Patterson and the first stop was another junkyard (there were other stops throughout the weekend; more on that in later posts). This was a good junkyard, acres of wrecks and lots of variety for abstracts and similar, like the two shots at the top of this post.

But the real find was a burned out mobile home. I don't know the story behind it or where it came from, but it was now tucked away in a corner of the yard. It was great visually, with strong graphic lines of charred wood, soft & diffuse colours from the layers of ash and soot, etc. And quite sad too, since all the former owner's possessions were still in the trailer. Clothes, kitchen dishes, a piece of mail somehow unscathed by the fire; it was all still there. I made what I think are some of my strongest images in a long time at the trailer. I'm not sure the exact reason I feel that way, whether it is the great visuals or the emotion.

Here's one of my favorites:

Junkyard Shoot

After a fairly lengthy photographic hiatus (note the complete lack of recent posts), I've started to pick up the camera again. I was out with a group on Saturday shooting in a junkyard. Two things of note:

1) I very easily go into visual overload when there is too much to photograph. On a shoot with so many opportunities for pictures, I tend to focus on just a few locations/objects. This isn't for any deep reason like 'working the image' until I get 'the shot'. It's just I can't absorb any more.

2) I really have to work harder on getting the composition right. I'm cropping way too many images that I should have taken more care with and gotten it right in camera. And I see the composition I want the minute I open the image on the computer; I'm just not seeing it in the field. Not a big deal I suppose, but a hold over from shooting slides. Having to crop all the time also makes me feel like I'm being lazy when I'm shooting, like I'm not trying hard enough to see what I need to see.

Anyway, here's a few of the images I made on Saturday.

The Driveway

I have't been making many photos lately; I have been busy with all the other things in life. As I started picking out a ’short list’ to choose from, I noticed something that had not been obvious before. I have an awful lot of slides that show mountains reflected in water. Thinking about that, I’ve come up with two possible explanations:

1) I’m attracted to the tranquility and peacefulness of the reflected image, appreciating the juxtaposition of solid, immobile rock with the transience and insubstantiality of the water.

2) I’m lazy and a reflected image makes for a simple, clean, thought-free composition.

I suspect it is a good mix of the two, with the relative proportions varying in each image.

More Flowers

Just a few more flower images from the spring and early summer. The first is Mt Chephren & Waterfowl Lake in northern Banff NP; oft photographed and a familiar landmark to anyone who has been in the area. The second is from the Maligine Range in Jasper NP; not nearly as photographed or recognizable.

Seeing

Photography is about seeing, not looking. A profound statement. But of course not one that is unique to me or one for which I can claim credit. It is a concept at the heart of ‘true’ photography. And it is one I have heard and read many times; in fact it is what jumped put at me while re-reading Freeman Patterson’s “Photography and the Art of Seeing” and Joel Meyerowitz’s “Cape Light”. But it has over the last little while become something of a revelation; not is a sudden flash of inspiration but more like a tiny kernel of truth burrowing into my brain. But why now?

I’ve been looking over a lot of the photo’s I’ve made over the last few months, many of which are ‘pretty’ flower pictures. And the ‘photography as meaning’ side of my brain keeps popping in to tell me that that is all they are; pretty pictures with no real meaning. But I think I last I realize that they are not. Making these images had made me look closer, to see the how and why, the line and colour and to perhaps appreciate or understand one little part of the world around me a little better. And I think, ultimately, that that is the appeal of photography to me. I have always been an observer of the world around me, and photography has helped me tune my vision and better appreciate even the seemingly insignificant things. And if you better see the little things, it helps put the larger questions into proper perspective or order.

So pretty flower pictures are OK; and so are dinning room chairs and dirty shed doors.

Spring Flowers

I did promise (threaten) more flower photos. Ted is a well respected Canadian Photojournalist who has been shooting the news for nearly 50 years. He had some interesting insights and stories to tell from a uniquely Canadian point of view. I was familiar with some of his work (particularly the picture of then Prime Minster Pierre Trudeau sliding down the banister, and of Ben Johnson crossing the finish line at the Seoul Olympics) but didn't really connect the images to the person.

It's an interesting interview and well worth taking 20 minutes to have a listen. I suppose that’s related to the fact that for the last few months of winter I can’t seem to build up interest enough to photograph much of anything. Or do much of anything; SAD and all that jazz. I hadn’t really been aware of this photographic pattern until this ‘spring flora season’ rolled around and it came to me while looking through some older images from springs gone by.

That’s not to say I don’t ever point the camera at a flower at other times of the year; it’s just more of a ‘need’ in the spring. This year it’s particularly noticeable living in a new place and in a rural area because there are all the new things to see and photograph. And playing the ‘guess what perennial the last owners planted in the flower beds’ game. This is the single mystery tulip that appeared next to our front walk a few weeks ago. Still waiting to see what colour it will be.

So be warned; there will be flower pictures for the next little while. In terms of learning technical skills, it can really speed up the learning curve. And it can be great to see what you get when you're just fooling around. This image of our cat (rather evil looking here, don't you think?) is the result of a long shutter speed and rotating the camera while making the picture. No post processing apart from cloning out a few dust blobs. The area is essentially a desert most of the year, but when the spring rains come, the rock and sand just burst with a brilliant display of wildflowers. Many of the images contrast the wildflowers with the rocky and forbidding environment in which they grow.

While I’ve never been to Namaqualand (and probably never will make it there), I do come from a place well known for its ruggedness (Newfoundland, AKA The Rock). Going through Freeman’s book has inspired me to dig out some old slides from home of flower and rock. I wonder what makes this motif such a compelling photographic subject? Is it the contrast between the solid permanence of the rock and the delicate, temporary flowers? Or is it a matter of relatively simple composition that draws many? I’ll wager that, at least in my case, it’s a matter of both.

By the way, I highly recommend any of Freeman’s books; his instructional books are what started me down the road to photography as a serious pursuit. He is very good when it comes to discussing basic design elements, balance and composition, all points I’ve found are often lacking in other instructional books. And his nature photography usually has a thoughtful and subtle (as opposed to a Velvia, colour-saturated) beauty to it that makes it stand out from the crowd.

Annual PDML Quotations List

I’ve been an on again – off again member of PDML, the Pentax Discuss Mailing List, for probably the last 5 or 6 years. The volume of posts is kind of heavy and tends to overwhelm my email, and I don’t like reading digests, so I’m often unsubscribed. All the same, I keep reading the list through the archives and frequently re-subscribe. The list is an interesting community of die hard Pentax shooters and is a wealth of knowledge, even if it frequently wanders off topic. If you have a question about anything Pentax, this is the best place to look. It also has more than it’s fair share of quirky, insightful, profound, less than profound, and occasionally profane comments. One of the list members, Mark Roberts, collects the best of these every year and publishes an annual PDML Quotations list. While it helps to be familer with the mailing list and people involved to make sense of some, there’s always something good. Well worth a read when you need a photo laugh.

Backyard Photography

I am a firm believer in the idea that one’s best photographs are made in places close to home rather than exotic and picturesque locals. I think is particularly the case for nature photography. It is simply a combination of more time to truly explore the photographic potential of your area, as well as a more intimate knowledge and understanding your personal landscape. I’ll take this one step further and say that the best place to practice photography is your backyard. Is there any other stretch of nature you know so well?

I’ve been thinking about this topic again because as a result of my recent move, my new backyard offers significant opportunities for photographic exploration. With a large partially wooded lot and lake frontage, I could probably wear out my K10D without going more than 2 minutes walk from the front door. For example, the image below was made at the lakes’ edge, late in the afternoon with ice just beginning to form along the shore. I used a Cokin Blue & Yellow polarizer to emphasize the blue and gold highlights of the reflections on the water and the rocks. I think the overall effect is nice, but I’m not really happy with the harsher blue & yellow highlights. This is a problem I’ve noticed when using the Blue & Yellow on a digital camera; it tends to make for some gaudy looking highlights. I’ve tried Darwin Wiggett’s suggestion to adjust white balance in the RAW conversion to compensate, but they don’t seem to work for me (possibly due to the fact he’s using the Singh-Ray filter not the cheapo Cokin version I have). Any one have any ideas?

Back Again

Three months between blog postings is not really a good record when it comes to keeping 'up to date'. Normally I would have some excuse that, in the end, would really be nothing more than a manifestation of an amazing ability to procrastinate. This time I have a rock solid reason for neglecting my online life, as the family and I spent the fall moving across the country from Alberta to Nova Scotia. Check your map; that's a lot of miles.

So with all the work of changing jobs, selling/buying houses, packing/unpacking and all associated hassles, photography and blogging have been on the backburner. Summer has come and largely gone in it's usual whirlwind, and I just never seemed to get around to posting anything. Well, one of the things that keep me busy all summer was travel and photography, so I will have some new pictures to post over the next few months. A trip back home to Newfoundland, a couple of treks to Jasper and Banff National Parks for camping & hiking, and a visit to the dinosaurs of Drumheller, AB resulted in a pile of images to sift through.

These first couple are from the Royal Tyrell Museum in Drumheller, a real Mecca if you're into dinosaurs and all other things prehistoric. These two images illustrate some of the reasons I’m quite happy with my Pentax K10D. These were both made in a dark museum at slow shutter speed (around 1/8 - 1/20s if I remember right) and ISO equivalent of 1600. Oh, and these are both hand held. The shake reduction feature of the K10D really shines in these types of shooting conditions, and I was quite impressed by the result I was able to get with handholding down to as low as 1/2s and 1/4s shutter speeds. I would have never dreamed of trying this with film.

Books: Around the World in Eighty Years

Eric Newby is best known as a travel writer. Written with a wry, self deprecating humour, books such as The Last Grain Race and A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush have become classics of travel writing. He has, however, always photographed his travels as well. I first came across his photos in a book called What the Traveller Saw, a collection of short essays and photographs. And I was impressed. So when I came across this volume of his photographs, I had to pick it up. It is a fine collection of photos from both well known locations such as Bali and places probably not on most tourist maps such as Haiti and Albania. It’s a little disappointing that there are no images from his year sailing from the UK to Australia and back again as a crewmember one of the last commercial sailing ships. But that’s just a personal bias. I was particularly drawn to the photographs of children that are in the book; these photos have a great power and intimacy, more so than most of the others. The photo of the boy on the boat in Macao the one of children at a camel fair in Rajasthan are two of those that really stand out. Overall, an interesting collection.

Spring is in the Air

Now that spring seems to be here to stay (it's taken it's sweet time this year), it's now officially the season for flower photos. I've been playing around using extension tubes and a mix of old lenses on my K10D. Trying mostly for some abstract images, but really just trying whatever strikes me at the time. Digital is great for this, as I can review my images as I to see what is working and what is not. I started reading his The Sunday Morning Photographer column on Luminous Landscape 3 or 4 years ago, subscribed to The 37th Frame, and then followed his blog The Online Photographer since it started over a year ago. You don't have to agree with his opinions to appreciate his knack for writing about photography (and a wide range of only mildly related topics as well).

Anyhow, his blog apparently went into some sort of spambot meltdown over the weekend. It's now up and running again on it's own The Online Photographer domain. If you've never read, it's well worth following.

The Best Place for Photography is Where you Are

I've been busy with work and home lately, and haven't gotten very far to indulge in my photography habit. For the last few years I've been shooting mainly Kodak E100VS with a Pentax MZ-5n camera. I bought a Pentax K10D about a month ago, and this image was the last frame on the (probably) last roll of slide film I'll be shooting. At least for the short term. Nostalgia may kick in at some point :)

Aurora November 2004

Speaking of Astrophotography, here are a few shots from one of the awesome auroral displays we were experiencing a few years ago.

These were made from the centre of a city of about 3/4 million (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada), so that should give you some idea of the brightness of this particular display. Like many people, I've owned and used camera(s) of the 'point & shoot' variety for years, but would never have considered it a hobby. I actually came seriously into photography through another hobby of mine, amateur astronomy. Like many people with an interest in that hobby, I wanted to try my hand at astrophotography. So I got myself an old second hand Pentax ME Super (still one of my favorite cameras ever) to start out with some simple wide-angle astrophotos. Well, I did shoot some astrophotos, and one or two weren't too bad. But what I soon found was that I just loved using that camera everyday. The feel of the camera in my hands, the crisp view through the lens, and that satisfying 'schwink' sound of the shutter. And over time I learned more technically about photography, and started more to consider the art of photography. Now, it is the satisfaction that comes with creating an image that keeps me coming back for more.
